Who we are

Hi I’m Kim. Thank you for landing here, on Adaptable Gardener! I know the internet is vast & I’m so glad you found your way to this garden patch of the web. First things first: who am I, the face behind AG? I’m a Seattle native, a pacific northwest gardener of over thirty years, a floral designer and writer. Ever since I worked weekends and summers on my family’s farm growing up, I’ve been drawn to the entire soil-seed-plant-seed-soil cycle. In the early years I had little knowledge and bumbled about a bit, making costly mistakes and reaching for the easiest, quickest solutions. But for the past 25 years I’ve thrown myself into regenerative gardening, creating gardens on an island, in the suburbs, in a Seattle high rise, at our urban home with its postage-stamp yard, and in one of the area’s wonderful P-Patch community gardens.

But lately the pace of the world’s changes has sped up: climate change is causing temperature changes and more and stronger natural disasters. The global political and economic landscape is alarming and makes us start packing go-bags and googling ‘how to survive an attack.’ In effect, the world order is changing rapidly, and we can find ourselves anxious, uncertain and grasping for real, tangible ways to be more self-sufficient. Gardening sustainably and regeneratively, with earth-friendliness at the fore, is a time-tested way to consistently & affordably provide both food and reassurance for you and your family (& friends and community, too!)

This is why I created Adaptable Gardener: a place to come for practical, thorough, well-vetted information on how to use your space—whatever the size—to grow healthy, abundant food, and soul-soothing flowers in a wide variety of ways: from indoor vertical growing systems, to small & large-scale composting, to hydroponics, hugelkultur and more. —I will test tools and systems and methods for you & tell you the results. I’ll share everything I know, and cheer you on as you create & manage your own sustainable, regenerative garden. Together we can adapt our methods to meet modern-day realities.

It’s time not only to grow, but to adapt!
